Da Nang is the work-hard, beach-break.
A clean beach city with a real airport, $1.20 coffee, 90-day e-visas, and a cost-of-living floor most people do not believe until they see it. This guide covers landing, staying, eating, healing, and getting out to Hoi An and Hue.
Why Da Nang works for short trips and long stays
Da Nang sits on Vietnam's central coast between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It has a real international airport, a long sandy beach, modern bridges, and a city centre that is cleaner and more relaxed than either capital. For a short trip, it is a beach-and-food base with UNESCO neighbours. For a long stay, it is one of the cheapest comfortable beach cities in Asia.
The city is compact enough that a motorbike or Grab gets you anywhere in 15–25 minutes. English is not as widespread as Penang or Kuala Lumpur, but it works at hotels, hospitals, malls, and most cafes aimed at foreigners. The trick to Da Nang is knowing the rhythm: early mornings are cool and productive, midday is for shade or AC, and evenings are for the beach, night markets, and riverside lights.

Airport 🛬
Da Nang International (DAD) is 3 km from downtown. Grab or taxi to the beach strip is 10–20 minutes and VND 50K–120K ($2–5). Pre-install Grab before landing.
Climate 🌡
Dry season February–August: hot (30–35°C), humid, rare rain. Wet season September–January: daily rain, cooler (22–28°C). February arrival is ideal.
Language 🗣
Vietnamese. English works at hotels, clinics, malls, Grab, and most foreigner cafés. Basic phrases and Google Translate cover the rest.
Currency 💵
Vietnamese đồng (VND). Cash dominates street food, taxis, markets, and most local shops. Cards accepted at hotels, malls, and many cafés. $1 ≈ VND 25,000; prices here show USD equivalents for clarity.
Best time to visit Da Nang
Da Nang has two seasons, not four. The dry season is hot and reliably sunny; the wet season is warm, humid, and rainy. Plan around them.
| Window | Season | Temperature | Recommendation | Lean Nomad rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feb–Apr | Dry, early | 25–33°C; rare rain | Best window. Warm, clear, before peak heat. | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| May–Aug | Dry, hot | 30–35°C; rare rain | Beach weather, pool days, early-morning work. | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Sep–Oct | Wet transition | 25–31°C; daily increasing rain | Avoid if possible. Rain becomes regular. | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| Nov–Jan | Wet | 22–28°C; daily rain | Still livable but plan indoor work and covered transport. | ⭐⭐⭐ |
What to pack
- Dry season: Quick-dry clothes, light colours, SPF 50 sunscreen, hat, breathable shoes.
- Wet season: Compact umbrella, light rain jacket, waterproof phone case, flip-flops for flooded streets.
- Year-round: A small dehumidifier or desiccant for the apartment closet. Mold grows fast.
Da Nang neighbourhoods for tourists and long-stay renters
Da Nang neighbourhoods split into three rough tiers: modern beachfront towers, quieter local areas, and cheap central apartments. Do not book a 90-day rental without seeing it in person. Spend 3–4 nights in a hotel while you walk the streets, test the WiFi, and listen to the traffic at night.
Outer layer — modern and safe 🏢
Areas: Vinhomes Ocean Park, Dragon Bridge precinct, My An, Son Tra. Studios $350–450, 1-bed $450–650, 2-bed $700–1,100. Pools, gyms, 24-hour security. Best for first-timers and anyone who wants reliable infrastructure.
Mid layer — quiet and local 🏠
Areas: Han River south bank, outer Ngu Hanh Son, Man Thai. 1-bed $350–500, 2-bed $550–750. Older buildings, fewer amenities, closer to beach access. Best for experienced nomads who value peace over a pool.
Inner layer — cheap and central 🏚
Areas: Downtown near Tran Phu or Bach Dang. Studios $250–350, 1-bed $350–450. Traffic-adjacent, authentic, older stock. Best for budget nomads who know what they are doing — not for first-timers.
My Khe / An Thuong strip 🏖
The beachfront tourist and expat hub. Foreigner-friendly cafés, restaurants, bars, and hotels line the streets behind the sand. Best for short trips and first-time long-stayers who want English-speaking services nearby.
Move-in checklist
Do not hand over a deposit until you have verified:
- AC runs cold in every room for at least 10 minutes.
- Hot water works in the shower, not just the sink.
- Internet speed is at least 30 Mbps down at the desk.
- You have a signed contract and a receipt for any deposit.
- You test the bed at 10 pm — is the street noise tolerable?
Hotels for short stays and first-week apartment hunting
Da Nang has strong budget-to-mid-range hotels, especially along My Khe Beach. Use a hotel for your first 3–4 nights while you inspect apartments in person. The online photos are generous; the smells and WiFi are not in the photos.
| Hotel | Area | Vibe / type | Rough price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Marino Boutique Danang | My Khe Beach side | Top-tier budget, rooftop terrace, helpful staff | $26–46/night |
| Balcona Hotel Da Nang | Beach strip | Rooftop infinity pool, gym, breakfast buffet | ~$35/night |

Da Nang food: under $10 a day, eating better than most Western cities
Central Vietnamese food is brighter, crunchier, and more herb-heavy than the northern pho bowl most foreigners know. In Da Nang, the best versions are still cooked by aunties on plastic stools for under $2.

Where to drink coffee and work
Vietnamese coffee is strong and cheap. The national drink is cà phê sữa đá (iced condensed-milk coffee). For a working morning, coconut coffee is a tourist favourite that actually works. Cafés with strong WiFi and AC cluster in An Thuong (beachside) and Bach Dang (riverfront). Cafés expect one order every two hours; staff will not rush you out.

Driving licence reality
Your International Driving Permit (IDP) is almost certainly invalid in Vietnam. Police rarely stop foreigners for licence checks in Da Nang, but if they do, expect an on-the-spot fine. Traffic enforcement increases around holidays. Wear a helmet and carry copies of your passport and visa.
What Da Nang actually costs

How long you can stay in Da Nang

Vietnamese holidays that affect Da Nang travel
Vietnam observes a mix of fixed national days and lunar festivals. Tet is the big one: transport, shops, and immigration offices shut down for days. Plan visa timing around it.
| Holiday / event | When | What to expect in Da Nang |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day (Tết Dương lịch) | 1 January | Public holiday; some shops and cafés closed. |
| Tết (Lunar New Year) | January/February (lunar, ~1 week) | Biggest holiday. Transport full, immigration offices closed, many restaurants shut or use holiday menus. |
| Hung Kings' Temple Festival | 10th day of 3rd lunar month | Public holiday; especially important in central/northern Vietnam. |
| Reunification Day | 30 April | Marks the fall of Saigon in 1975. Parades, closed offices. |
| International Labour Day | 1 May | Public holiday; often combined with Reunification Day for a long weekend. |
| Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu) | 15th day of 8th lunar month | Lanterns, mooncakes, family gatherings; not a full public holiday but busy evenings. |
| National Day | 2 September | Independence day; fireworks in larger cities, government offices closed. |
Working from Da Nang
Most remote workers in Da Nang do not use coworking spaces — they use cafés. The daily rhythm is early morning work, a midday heat break, then an evening work window when the temperature drops.
Coworking spaces
| Space | Monthly | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DNC Danang Coworking | ~$80–120 | Established name, good internet, mix of Vietnamese and foreign workers. |
Café offices
- An Thuong (behind My Khe Beach) — beachside, foreigner-friendly, open late.
- Bach Dang (riverfront) — central, scenic, strong WiFi.
Café etiquette: order one coffee every two hours. Staff will not rush you out. Coconut coffee is the popular working fuel.
Internet
Standard apartment fibre is 50–100 Mbps and costs VND 150K–250K/month ($6–10). ISPs are usually Viettel or FPT. Ask the landlord which is wired into the building — switching ISPs can mean a 5-day technician delay.
