Airport 🛬
Samui International Airport (USM) is near Chaweng in the northeast. Bangkok Airways owns and operates it; flights to Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, Singapore, and seasonal routes. Taxis to Chaweng ~฿500, to Lamai ~฿700, to Maenam ~฿600.

Best January–April. May–September is hotter and wetter but still usable. October–December is the rainiest stretch. The island keeps its airport, hospitals, and ring road open year-round.

Thai official. English is common in hotels, restaurants, hospitals, and tourist shops. Learning a few Thai phrases goes far at local stalls and songthaews.

Where to stay on Samui
The ring road (4169) circles the island in roughly two hours by car. Each beach has a different personality. Match your base to your tolerance for noise, your transport, and whether you are staying three days or three months.
Chaweng 🏖
The busiest beach: hotels, restaurants, malls, nightlife, and the airport close by. Best for first-timers who want everything walking distance. Noisy at night in central strips.
Lamai 🌴
Lively but more local than Chaweng. Good restaurants, massage shops, and a long beach. The Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks are nearby. Better value for long stays.
Bophut / Fisherman's Village 🍽
Upscale restaurants, boutique hotels, and the famous Friday walking street. Calmer than Chaweng, more polished than Lamai. Family-friendly.
Maenam 🌊
Quieter north-coast beach. More local, cheaper long-stay condos, and a direct view of Koh Phangan. Best for families and long-stay travelers who want calm.
Choeng Mon / Plai Laem 🏝
Small sheltered beaches and luxury resorts in the northeast. Close to the airport and Big Buddha. Quiet, expensive, great for short resort stays.
Taling Ngam / Lipa Noi 🌅
West-coast sunsets, luxury villas, and almost no crowds. You need a car or scooter. Best for slow stays and sunset photography.
Hotels and long-stay condos on Koh Samui
Samui has everything from backpacker hostels to villa estates. For long stays, look at serviced apartments and condos in Chaweng, Lamai, or Maenam. For short resort stays, Bophut and Choeng Mon dominate the boutique and luxury market.

Scooters, taxis, and songthaews on Samui

Legal and cultural warnings
- Lèse-majesté (Section 112): Insulting the Thai monarchy carries 3–15 years per count. Foreigners have been prosecuted. Social media posts made outside Thailand can still count.
- Temple etiquette: Remove shoes, cover shoulders and knees, do not point feet at Buddha images, and monks cannot touch women.
- Scooter law: International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva) required for tourists. Home license must show the matching category. Helmets mandatory; fine up to ฿2,000 rider / ฿4,000 unhelmeted passenger since June 2025.
- Drugs: Thai drug laws are severe. Cannabis shops were closed under 2025 policy changes.
Healthcare on Koh Samui
Samui has three main private hospitals. For complex emergencies, patients are sometimes medevaced to Bangkok or Phuket, but the local private hospitals handle most routine and urgent issues.

Working from Koh Samui
Samui is not Chiang Mai or Canggu for nomads, but it works. Fibre 200–500 Mbps is common in newer condos and resorts. Coworking spaces exist in Chaweng and Lamai but are fewer than Bali or KL. Most long-stay workers use cafés or apartment Wi-Fi. Test the connection before signing a lease.
- Coworking: Search for current spaces in Chaweng and Lamai; names and availability change quickly.
- Cafés: Black Canyon Coffee, The Coffee Club, and beachfront cafés in Chaweng and Bophut usually have Wi-Fi and power outlets.
- Power: 220V, type A/C plugs. Outages are rare in tourist areas but carry a power bank.
