Lombok and the Gili Islands are Indonesia's anti-Bali long-stay option — same warm water and green hills, but cheaper rooms, quieter roads, and beaches where you can still hear the waves.
Most visitors do a quick Bali-to-Gili party loop or a Rinjani summit weekend. Long-stayers split their time: Kuta Lombok or Senggigi for a scooter-and-surf base, then hop to a Gili for car-free island days. The whole region is small enough that one trip can cover all of it.
Why Lombok & the Gili Islands work for 30–90-day budget nomads
Lombok is the island next to Bali that most travellers skip. It is less developed, less crowded, and cheaper across the board. The south coast has empty surf bays and a growing string of guesthouses around Kuta Lombok; the west coast has the old resort strip of Senggigi; the north is dominated by Mount Rinjani; and the offshore Gili Islands are car-free, coral-ringed, and only minutes apart by boat.
The region is not a single city — it is a loose network of small towns and islands. Long-stayers usually pick one mainland base and one island base, or move between them every few weeks. Infrastructure is weaker than Bali or Java, but the trade-off is space, lower prices, and a slower rhythm.

Airport 🛬
Lombok International Airport (LOP) is in Praya, Central Lombok. It serves domestic routes and some international flights. Bali is reachable by air or by sea from Lembar.

Tropical. Dry season is April–October and brings the best surf, diving, and Rinjani trekking. Wet season is November–March; some boats stop and roads can flood.

There is no single centre. Pick a base that matches your priorities: surf and a young scene in Kuta, calm beaches and older infrastructure in Senggigi, or full island quiet on Gili Air or Meno.
Kuta Lombok / Mandalika
The rising surf-and-digital-nomad hub on the south coast. Dozens of bays within scooter range, a growing cafe scene, and easy airport access.
Senggigi
The old west-coast resort strip. Calmer beaches, more restaurants and services than the south, and fast-boat links to Bali. Quieter nightlife.
Mataram / Ampenan
The local city. Cheapest accommodation, real supermarkets, hospitals, and immigration. No beach, but a good fallback for admin and medical needs.
Gili Trawangan
The largest Gili: dive shops, nightlife, bike-only streets, and the widest accommodation range. Busiest and most social of the three.
Gili Air
Mid-sized Gili with a slower rhythm than Trawangan. Good snorkelling, a small local village, and enough restaurants without the party noise.
Gili Meno
The smallest Gili. No nightlife, few shops, bird sanctuary, and the most secluded beaches. Best for a short reset, not a productive work month.

Lombok's signature: small chicken grilled and basted with a fiery chilli-shrimp-paste glaze. Often served with plecing kangkung.

Lombok's draw is outdoor variety. You can surf a beginner bay, snorkel with turtles, summit a volcano, or simply read a book on a beach with no cars. The Gilis are close enough for weekend hops; the south-coast bays are spread enough that you need a scooter.

Getting around Lombok and the Gilis
Lombok has no ride-hail density like Jakarta or Bali. A scooter is the practical choice for anyone staying more than a week. On the Gilis, the only transport is walking, bicycle, or cidomo horse cart.

Indonesia visa reality in Lombok and the Gilis
The visa rules are the same as the rest of Indonesia: a 30-day visa on arrival (VOA), extendable once, or a longer-stay visa arranged before arrival. The nearest immigration office for extensions is in Mataram.

Legal and safety warnings
- No lifeguards: Most beaches have no patrols; currents are real and drownings happen.
- Mount Rinjani: Check alert levels; the park closes during heightened activity.
- Gili Trawangan police: There is no police station on the island; serious matters go to Lombok mainland.
- Drugs: Indonesian drug laws are extremely severe; small-quantity possession can mean long prison terms or death penalty.
- Scooter licensing: Carry your home licence plus an International Driving Permit; checkpoints occur.
